Foursquare implements scoring system, ranks businesses

Foursquare, the location-based social network that lets you check in to businesses, has released an update to their app and overall service. They have implemented a unique Foursquare scoring system that ranks businesses in an effort to show you how popular a business is. According to their blog and the update:

With this update, we’ve made finding the best place even easier.

Now when you’re searching for somewhere to go in Explore, you’ll see a score next to the name of a place. It’s our way to give you a quick sense of how much people love it.

Instead of other sites where everything gets 3.5 stars, we come up with our scores using the same Foursquare magic that powers Explore. We look at signals like tips, likes, dislikes, popularity, and nearly 3 billion check-ins from over 25 million people worldwide.

This is version 5.3.3 of the app. It recently underwent an overhaul, and this update is clearly trying to differentiate Foursquare even more from Yelp, as well as Facebook Places and Google+ Local.

Do you think scores on Foursquare will have an effect on your decision to visit a business?
