Is Facebook Hiding Your Posts?

You are here: Home / Social Media Articles / Is Facebook Hiding Your Posts?

January 3, 2013 //  by Mike Allton

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For some time now, Facebook has been using their internal algorithms, called EdgeRank, to determine what posts you see in your News Feed. The brutal reality is that you are not seeing everything that your friends or businesses you’ve Liked have posted. But what can you do? Or, more importantly, what if you’re a business with a Facebook Page? How do you make sure that your followers are seeing your great content?

Unfortunately, as a business, there is nothing inherent that you can do to force visibility of your posts. However, Adam Goldberg over at Social Media Today has pointed out that as users, we can control how much information is included in our individual News Feeds from specific sources, and each business can teach their followers how to see more posts.

How to Control Your Facebook News Feed

As an individual user, go to the Facebook Page you wish to control, like http://www.facebook.com/TheSocialMediaHat. Make sure that you’ve Liked the page, and then mouseover the Liked button. A pop up window will appear and simply make sure that Get Notifications and Show In News Feed are both checked. Click on the image above to see an example.

That’s it! Now you can be assured that you will see all updates from that Page.

How to Encourage Your Fans

Now all you have to do as a business is encourage your fans and followers to take these simple steps. You can write a blog post like this one, or just post a note to your Facebook wall. Adam recommends, and I agree, that you should send out an email and include a note in your newsletter. You should also re-post the instructions every once in a while to ensure that everyone sees it.

If you create a blog post for yourself like this one, it will likely be easier for you to explain and re-share your information.

There are also things you can do to improve your EdgeRank score and allow Facebook’s algorithm to put your posts in front of more fans organically. Please see our article, Facebook EdgeRank: what you need to now!

Let us know if this works for you, or if you have any other questions!
