Twitter Focuses on Local Trends

Twitter has released an update for their mobile app today that lets users “see what’s happening near you or around the world.” The update introduces a location aspect to Trends that can localize tweets and and give users a way to find tweets and tweeters near them.

Additional changes include:

  • Invite friends to join Twitter from within the app
  • Improved playback of Vine videos
  • Replies to retweeted Tweets now include both the author and person who retweeted the Tweet
  • Enjoy a smoother experience due to bug fixes and other improvements

To access the new location Trends, open the app and tap on Discover, then tap on Trends near the top of the screen. By default, your Trends view wil be Tailored Trends which will show you trending hashtags and phrases based on both your set location and the people that you’re currently following. Scroll down and tap on Change location to select to see just your current location or any other location via search. At any time, you can switch back to Tailored Trends.

It’s interesting to note that Promoted Trends still appear at the top of the list, regardless of location.

This is yet another reason for businesses, particularly those that target a local custom base, need to have complete profiles on all of the major social networks and regular activity. A Mexican Restaurant for instance could be tweeting facts about Cinco de Mayo and be more easily noticed by local Tweeters and potential customers.

Check out the update and let us know what you think!
