Get to Know the Internet’s Most Famous Cats

You are here: Home / Digital Marketing / Get to Know the Internet’s Most Famous Cats

April 15, 2013 //  by Mike Allton

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We don’t really understand why some people don’t like pet-shaming sites. There’s this Tumblr called Cat-Shaming and we seriously can’t get enough of it. We especially had a good chuckle over this one cat who ate her mommy’s birth control pills and this furry guy named Wiggly who drinks from the toilet. Of course, as entertaining as these cool kitties are, there’s no denying that there are other more famous felines that have charmed even the most discriminating Internet citizens. Let’s take a look at the web’s biggest cat stars.

Grumpy Cat

Is there anyone who doesn’t know or hasn’t heard of Tard, also known as Grumpy Cat? We imagine it’s got to be someone who doesn’t know how to navigate the web very well because Tard (short for Tardar Sauce) has been an Internet sensation since September of last year. The mixed-breed cat was born on April 4, 2012 and is “said to have some ragdoll, snowshoe and Siamese in her line.” According to Know Your Meme, Grumpy Cat’s photo, which was first uploaded to Reddit, reached more than 25,300 up votes in the first 24 hours. Since then Tard has been featured on various humor sites, animal photo blogs, Facebook and YouTube. She also drew long lines at the recently concluded SXSW, stealing the spotlight from the likes of Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle and keynote speaker former Vice President Al Gore.

Snoopy the Cat

Cutest Paw describes Snoopy the Cat as “one of the most popular cats in the world especially in China.” Known for his short snout and large brown eyes, Snoopy is an exotic shorthair cat born on May 11, 2011. Snoopy and his human currently reside in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, which could explain Snoopy’s large following on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo. This cutie also has a Facebook fan page set up by a Thai fan and two Tumblr blogs – Snoopy Kitty Purr and Snoopy409.

Venus

Harvey Dent has got nothing on Venus the cat, whose face is divided in two colors – black and calico. With her own Facebook page, a YouTube video, and an appearance on the Today Show, the three-year-old tortoiseshell really is an Internet star. What’s even more interesting about this feline is that experts are positing that she “may have different DNA on each side of her body.” According to Leslie Lyons, a professor at the University of California, Davis, “She is extremely, extremely rare. But you can explain it and you can understand it.” Another mystery? Venus’ single blue eye as “cat eyes are typically green or yellow, not blue.”

Colonel Meow

Before we explain who Colonel Meow is, allow us to say that everybody should channel their inner Colonel Meow, whenever their phone service providers do something to disappoint them. That said, the Internet’s Angriest Cat is a Himalayan Persian cat “best known for his unique fluffy coat and intense facial expression.” Colonel Meow was adopted by Anne Marie Avey in 2011, after he was rescued by the local Himalayan and Persian Society, and they currently live in Los Angeles, California. You can experience the awesomeness that is Colonel Meow by visiting his Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter pages.

Maru

Cardboard boxes are honestly boring by themselves; but when you add cats to the equation, you get what we like to call a gift that keeps on giving. And that is exactly how Maru, a male Scottish Fold cat from Japan, endeared himself to the citizens of the Internet – particularly the YouTube community. Maru’s videos are mostly “him playing in a childlike fashion, mostly lying around, jumping into small cardboard boxes and sliding across his owner’s wooden floor.” To date, Maru has two photobooks, a compilation DVD, a web advertisement and commercials released in Japan.
