Apple updates Keynote, Numbers and Pages for iOS

Apple's signature productivity apps, Keynote, Pages and Numbers, the iWork suite, all received updates today for the iOS platform that provided major compatibility improvements as well as a number of additional features. These are changes that we think will help small businesses tremendously. Let's take a look at the improvements offered for each program.

Keynote

KeynoteKeynote is a presentation software package that is comparable to Microsoft PowerPoint, and comes in iOS and Mac flavors. Keynote for iOS has been updated so that its compatibility with Microsoft's PowerPoint has been improved, as well as Keynote for Mac.

Additionally, the update includes:

  • The app can now import and export all MS PowerPoint and Keynote for Mac slide sizes.
  • The app can also now import and export slide themes, complete with master slides and preset styles.
  • Play back all Keynote action builds including Move, Rotate, Scale and Opacity
  • Add new slide transitions including Shimmer and Sparkle
  • Preserve calculations in tables when importing from and exporting to Keynote for Mac
  • The update allows the app to add reflections to shapes
  • New print layouts include options to print with presenter notes, with builds, and without backgrounds
  • Lock and unlock objects

Numbers

NumbersNumbers is a spreadsheet software package that is comparable to Microsoft Excel, and comes in iOS and Mac flavors. Numbers for iOS has been updated so that its compatibility with Microsoft's Excel has been improved, as well as Numbers for Mac.

Additionally, the update includes:

  • Hide and unhide rows and columns
  • Import and export Numbers for Mac spreadsheets with filters, and turn filters on and off
  • Preserve rich text in tables when importing and exporting
  • Add reflections to shapes
  • Lock and unlock objects

Pages

Pages

Pages is a word processing software package that is comparable to Microsoft Word, and comes in iOS and Mac flavors. Pages for iOS has been updated so that its compatibility with Microsoft's Word has been improved, as well as Word for Mac.

Additionally, the update includes:

  • Use Change Tracking to track changes to body text in a document
  • Accept and reject individual changes as you review a document
  • Import Pages and Microsoft Word documents with change tracking and continue to track changes to body text
  • Preserve tracked changes in documents exported in Microsoft Word or Pages format
  • Preserve calculations in tables when importing from and exporting to Pages for Mac
  • Add reflections to shapes
  • Lock and unlock objects

The overall benefit to businesses from these updates is the fact that Apple is increasingly working to make all of your business documents completely portable and extendable utilizing iCloud. The easier it is for you to move from one device to another with your documents, the better. When I am giving my Content Marketing 101 seminar to local small businesses, I am able to view and share the Keynote presentation on my MacBook Pro or my iPad or even my iPhone. While I would never conduct a seminar using my iPhone as a display, I might use my iPhone to power an AppleTV connected to a flat screen or projector, if that's what the office environment required.

Have you tried Keynote, Numbers or Pages on your iPad or iPhone? What do you think?
