What's up with LinkedIn?

What's up with LinkedIn?

Last September, I wrote a summary of the major developments LinkedIn had implemented to that point in 2012. Entitled, "Is the LinkedIn Business Experience Getting Better or Worse," I suggested that most of the changes to that point were definite improvements, with the possible exception of the new Notification system that was sure to generate a lot of spam. Not long after writing that post, LinkedIn initiated the new Endorsement system and it seems like things have gone downhill from there. Let's take a look at what LinkedIn has done in the last five months and you can judge for yourself.

LinkedIn Congratulatory Email - Brilliant or Brainless?

LinkedIn Congratulatory Email - Brilliant or Brainless?

You may have received or read about the emails that LinkedIn is sending out. To "celebrate" reaching 200 million members, LinkedIn has sent a series of emails out to select members, congratulating them on an achievement and thanking them for helping to build LinkedIn to what it is today.

This morning, I received mine, with LinkedIn congratulating me for being in the top 1% of profiles viewed. I assume the same exact message was sent to me and 2 million other LinkedIn users. I do know that other people have received emails that were somewhat different, so "profile views" was not the only category, and the percentages varied.

LinkedIn Answers - will you miss them?

LinkedIn Answers - will you miss them?

For some time, LinkedIn has offered a question and answer forum called LinkedIn Answers at http://www.linkedin.com/answers. Similar to Quora, LinkedIn users can pose questions or provide answers to other user's questions and demonstrate their expertise. It's a service that has received mixed feedback, certainly, but LinkedIn has decided to stop providing the service by January 31. Will you miss it?

Share Images and Files on LinkedIn Company Updates

Share Images and Files on LinkedIn Company Updates

LinkedIn continues to develop and improve the Company Page exerience, as well as integrate SlideShare into their platform. Businesses with a LinkedIn Company Page can now share images or files as a status update, not just text and links. The file sharing functionality in particular is interesting since a presentation or PDF that is uploaded will be automatically converted and displayed.

Earlier I uploaded a new eBook I created called Creating Great Content. It's a free eBook and being able to share that with my LinkedIn followers directly is an excellent marketing tool.

LinkedIn Passes 200 Million Members

LinkedIn Passes 200 Million Members

LinkedIn announced today that the professional social network has passed 200 million members. It's a tremendous milestone and the announcement went on to break down how that membership is comprised.

For instance, the site boasts 74 million members in the United Sates, and 11 million in the United Kingdom. Interestingly, India has actually surpassed the UK for second place at 18 million members.

LinkedIn is gaining approximately 2 new members every second, and a great many of those are coming from countries like Turkey, Brazil and even China.

From an industry perspective, Information Technology (IT) represents the largest segment at 4 million members, followed by Financial Services, Higher Education, Computer Software and Telecommunication.

Spotlight Groups on your LinkedIn Company Page

Spotlight Groups on your LinkedIn Company Page

Quietly amongst the new Google+ Communities and #PhotoWars this week, LinkedIn has added a new feature to its Company Pages called Group Spotlight. With it, you can feature a group that you own or are a member of right on your Company Page.

To spotlight a group, log into LinkedIn and go to your Company Page. Once there, click on the blue Edit button and go down to the Featured Groups section. You can then start typing in the name of the group you want to feature and select it when it comes up, just like when you're posting an update. Once you've selected all that you wish to feature, scroll back up and click the Publish button.

Getting Started in Social Media Series, Part Two: LinkedIn

Getting Started in Social Media Series, Part Two: LinkedIn

Many of the clients we work with are just getting started on Social Media. If they have used Facebook or other Social Media platforms at all, it has been only for limited personal use. In order to help small business owners get started, we are launching a series of posts, each of which will outline how to quickly get up and running on a specific social network. Businesses can go through these posts one at a time or pick and choose which networks they want to start with. With each post we will review how to set up your account and cover some of the basics for posting and participating on that network.

LinkedIn Takes a Page from Klout

LinkedIn Takes a Page from Klout

If you have a Klout account, you know that each day you are given a set number of K's which you can use to indicate topics other users are influential in. The giving and receiving of K's is an activity that generates a lot of user activity and keeps Klout users coming back daily. Now, LinkedIn is doing something along the same lines.

In a blog post, LinkedIn explained, "With just one click, you can now endorse your connections for a skill they’ve listed on their profile or recommend one they haven’t added yet."

Each time you endorse a skill for one of your connections they will receive a notification. It also generates activity for your profile that others can see.

It's too early to judge whether or not your connections will be impressed by your number of endorsements but initial opinions seemed to suggest that would not be the case.

Is the LinkedIn Business Experience Getting Better or Worse?

Is the LinkedIn Business Experience Getting Better or Worse?

Over the past few months LinkedIn has implemented quite a few changes, from dramatic shifts in the overall look and layout of the site, to minor changes like the ability to follow company pages from your mobile phone. Since LinkedIn is the social network for professionals, one would assume that all of these changes are great for business and professionals. But are they? We will review each of the nine significant changes that have been implemented and see what conclusions we can reach.

Be Recommendable

Be Recommendable. Make sure that your customers CAN and SHOULD recommend you on

I was recently asked to provide a connection on LinkedIn with a recommendation. On LinkedIn, if you're connected with someone, you can write a nice review of them that "recommends" them to other people. This particular individual, who I won't name, is someone whom I do not know personally, have never worked with, but met through another social network, Empire Avenue. He sent me a direct message through LinkedIn asking me to endorse him and saying that he would endorse me in return.

Since I wasn't familiar with him professionally, I decided to take a look at his profile and work and see if there were aspects on which I could write an honest recommendation. I was shocked at what I found. There was nothing that I could use to base a recommendation. NOTHING. I hope we can all learn from this person's mistakes and make sure that other people can easily recommend us on LinkedIn and elsewhere.
